Solo in Athens: between ancient Greek magic and modern Greek flair
Share
As a solo traveller, I love cities where you can feel the past and find the peace of the present. Athens is one of them. Ancient ruins, whitewashed streets, breathtaking viewpoints.. and at the same time, a young, vibrant vibe. Ideal for those who enjoy travelling alone but never want to feel alone.
A walk through the old heart of the city
Athens isn't just about the Acropolis (although it remains impressive, of course). For me, the real magic lies in the streets of Anafiotika, a tiny village nestled against the rock of the Acropolis, where you suddenly find peace and quiet among the white houses.
Plaka, Athens' oldest neighborhood, is also a place where you want to get lost. Colorful facades, small boutiques, tavernas with flowers on the tables... You'll naturally relax as you stroll around.
An absolute must-see: Areopagus Hill . Climb it at sunset for a magical view of Athens and the Acropolis bathed in golden light.
Sights that linger
Besides the famous Parthenon, there are more pearls to discover:
- The Panathenaic Stadium: one of the oldest stadiums in the world, made entirely of marble. You can feel the power of the first modern Olympic Games.
- Stavros Niarchos Park: a modern cultural park by the sea. A place where locals jog, picnic, and relax.
- Temple of Poseidon in Sounion: just outside Athens, but what a view! The temple is perched on a cliff overlooking the sea, making it a wonderful day trip.
Eating in Athens: simple, tasty and affordable
One of the reasons Athens is perfect for solo travellers? The food! You'll find a place on every corner where you can enjoy moussaka, souvlaki, or a fresh Greek salad for just a few euros.
Or how about:
- Spanakopita (puff pastry with spinach and feta)
- Loukoumades (Greek donuts with honey)
- Frappé in the sun on a terrace where no one is in a hurry
And: you never feel awkward eating alone. Athens is welcoming and relaxed. Everyone is welcome, alone or not.
From airport to city
Athens has one international airport: Athens International Airport , about 40 minutes from the city center. You can easily get into the city by public transport, taxi, or the Free Now app. I used the app myself and found it super easy and reliable.
Uber? It has limited service or is more expensive.
Why Athens is ideal for solo travellers
